Just Politics: The Dangerous Justification of Hate Speech

Well, that was brutal. Not just the election but rather, the entire election cycle. As a matter of fact, politics as a whole has moved from beyond overwhelming to whatever stage comes after that. “Just politics,” which used to be a way of explaining the phenomenon of overpromising and underdelivering, has evolved into a justification for the use of lies, hate speech, and other dangerous rhetoric to achieve an objective at the expense of others.

While this isn’t a new phenomenon, the current climate feels unprecedented. Politicians often tear down the work of their predecessors rather than building upon it. This destructive behavior, while historically common, has reached a new level of intensity.

The New Normal

The normalization of trash talk has made it difficult to discern truth from fiction. If a majority of the populous disagrees with you on social or political issues and are willing to spread misinformation, then admittedly, it fucks with your head a little bit but also makes things crystal clear. When confronted with blatant falsehoods, should you call them out or let them continue? Many Americans seem indifferent to the toxic rhetoric spewed by politicians and pundits alike. As a result, those with a conscience are left to clean up the mess.
Ultimately, people prioritize their own beliefs and desires over facts and civility. What one person sees as trash, another may view as treasure. That is, something you may see for what it is—a heap of garbage—is the same thing others deem worthy enough to heap praise upon.

So, what can you do?

For starters, don’t lose your mind or your integrity. Disconnect. If only temporarily, distance yourself from the toxic environment. Find a peaceful place where you can focus on positive aspects of your life.

However, if you can’t completely avoid the negativity, take action. Dispel misinformation and focus on areas where you can make a positive impact.

Remember, while many find the lies, hate speech, misogyny, and threats of violence abhorrent, others embrace them. Don’t be afraid to offend those who promote harmful rhetoric. Call them out on their bullshit, even if it means challenging those you know and love.
